AI video generators produce silent footage. That silence is a bigger problem than most people realize, because sound carries as much of a video's emotional impact as the image does. A well-designed soundtrack can make mediocre footage feel immersive, and a badly mixed one can ruin beautiful visuals. Since AI gives you no audio at all, you're building the entire sound layer from scratch. This guide covers how to do that well.

The elements of sound design

A complete soundtrack usually has four layers, and understanding each helps you build a rich, intentional mix:

  • Dialogue and voiceover: spoken content, whether characters talking or narration over the visuals
  • Music and score: the emotional backbone that guides how the audience feels
  • Sound effects (SFX): discrete sounds tied to actions and objects, footsteps, doors, impacts
  • Ambient soundscapes: the continuous background texture that establishes place, room tone, wind, city hum, forest

Most amateur videos use only music. Layering all four is what makes audio feel professional and immersive.

The audio workflow

1. Audio planning Before you touch a waveform, decide what the scene should sound like. Match the audio concept to the visual content and the emotion you're after. A tense scene needs sparse, low sound and maybe silence; a lively scene needs energy and layers. Plan your audio the way you'd plan your shots.

2. Source your audio You have several options, often combined:

  • Record original content: the most control, ideal for specific sounds or voiceover
  • License music and SFX: professional quality from music libraries and sound-effect marketplaces
  • Generate AI audio: AI music and sound-effect tools can produce custom tracks and effects
  • Use royalty-free libraries: free or low-cost sources for music and effects

Whatever the source, confirm you have the rights to use it, especially for commercial work.

3. Editing Sync your audio to the picture and cut it for rhythm and pacing. Sound effects should land exactly on their visual cues, a footstep sound when the foot hits the ground, an impact when objects collide. Because AI video has no native sync sound, you're placing every effect manually against the visual, which is painstaking but essential for believability.

4. Mixing Balance the levels so every element sits where it should. Dialogue is usually the priority and should always be intelligible. Music supports without overwhelming. Effects punctuate without startling (unless that's the intent). Ambient sound sits low, felt more than heard. Use EQ to carve space so elements don't fight, and compression to keep levels consistent.

5. Mastering The final polish: set overall loudness to the target for your platform, ensure the mix translates across playback devices (phone speakers, headphones, laptop), and check for clipping or distortion. A well-mastered mix sounds clean and consistent everywhere.

Choosing music

Music does more emotional work than any other audio element. Choose tracks that:

  • Match the mood and tone of your visuals
  • Support the narrative rather than distract from it
  • Fit genre expectations (or subvert them deliberately)
  • Enhance the emotional impact of key moments

Avoid overused stock tracks; your audience has heard them everywhere, and they cheapen otherwise good work. Time musical shifts to visual beats, a swell on a reveal, a drop on a cut, so the music feels composed for the piece rather than laid on top of it.

Sound effects

Diegetic sounds Sounds that exist within the story world, footsteps, a door closing, rain, a car engine. These ground the scene in physical reality and are essential for believability. For AI video, every diegetic sound has to be added manually, matched to what's happening on screen.

Non-diegetic sounds Music and effects added purely for audience effect, a dramatic whoosh on a transition, a musical sting on a reveal, ambient drones that build tension. These shape emotional response and pacing.

A worked example

You've generated a 15-second clip of waves crashing on a rocky shore at dusk, intended as a meditative opening for a travel piece. Raw, it's silent and lifeless. You build the audio in layers: first an ambient bed of ocean and distant wind to establish place, then specific wave-crash effects timed to the biggest waves on screen, then a soft, slow ambient music track underneath to set a contemplative mood, and finally a single seagull call placed early to add a moment of life. You mix so the waves dominate, the music sits low, and nothing clips. The clip transforms from a silent loop into an immersive, atmospheric opening, entirely through sound.

Technical considerations

  • Sample rate and bit depth: work at 48kHz / 24-bit for video, the standard for professional delivery
  • Audio format: export in the format your delivery platform requires (AAC for most web, WAV for masters)
  • Compression and dynamics: control the range between loudest and quietest so the mix works on small speakers
  • Spatial audio: pan effects to match on-screen position, and consider stereo width or surround for immersive projects

AI audio tools

A growing set of AI tools can help build your sound layer:

  • Music composition: generate custom tracks matched to mood and length
  • Voice synthesis: create narration or dialogue without recording
  • Sound effect generation: produce specific effects on demand
  • Dialogue enhancement: clean up and clarify recorded speech

These can speed up production, but apply the same rights and disclosure care you would to visuals: confirm commercial licensing, and be transparent about synthetic voices where your audience or platform expects it.

Troubleshooting

Dialogue is hard to hear: raise it in the mix, cut competing frequencies from the music with EQ, and duck the music slightly whenever dialogue plays.

Mix sounds thin: you're probably missing an ambient layer. Room tone and background texture add fullness even when they're barely audible.

Effects feel fake: check your timing. A sound that lands even a few frames off its visual cue breaks believability. Nudge it into exact sync.

Mix sounds different on phone versus headphones: always check your final mix on multiple devices, phone speakers, headphones, and laptop speakers. Most viewers watch on phones, so make sure the mix holds up on small speakers with limited bass and stereo width.
