Raw AI video is rarely final. The generation might be clean, but it still needs color, pacing, audio, and often some correction work before it's ready for an audience. This guide covers the post-production workflow that turns a set of generated clips into a finished piece, from the first assembly edit through final export.
Why post matters
AI models give you motion and composition, but they don't give you a narrative arc, matched color across clips, or audio that sells the mood. They also produce artifacts: flickering pixels, inconsistent lighting, warped details. If you ship raw generations, your work looks unfinished. Post-production is where you fix problems and add polish so the final piece reads as intentional, not accidental.
The post-production workflow
1. Select your clips
Generate more than you need, then pick the best takes. Watch for these specific issues:
- Warped subjects (hands, faces, secondary figures)
- Jittery or inconsistent camera motion
- Flickering or strobing pixels
- Lighting that shifts mid-clip
- Action that doesn't read clearly
Keep only the takes where the primary action is clean and the technical quality is acceptable. If a clip has a beautiful first half and a broken last second, trim it rather than discarding the whole thing.
2. Assemble your edit
Import the selected clips into your editing software (Premiere, Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve, or similar) and build the structure. Focus on pacing and narrative flow first, not color or effects. Cut clips together so the action reads clearly and the rhythm feels intentional. AI-generated clips often have uneven pacing inside a single shot, so you may need to speed ramp or trim dead moments.
If you're cutting between multiple AI generations, watch for jarring shifts in lighting, camera angle, or subject appearance. You can't fix every inconsistency in post, but you can minimize it by choosing where to cut and how long to hold each shot.
3. Color grade
AI models produce inconsistent color and tone, even within the same prompt. Color grading unifies your clips so they feel like they belong to the same piece.
Start with primary correction: balance exposure, contrast, and white balance across all clips so they match. Then move to secondary grading: shape the mood with color choices that support your narrative. A warm, golden grade reads as nostalgic or hopeful; a cool, desaturated look reads as clinical or somber.
If you're new to grading, start with a LUT (look-up table) as a base and adjust from there. Most editing tools include built-in LUTs, or you can download cinematic ones that mimic film stocks. Apply the same LUT to all clips in a sequence, then tweak individual clips as needed.
4. Integrate audio
Silent video feels empty. Audio makes the piece immersive and directs the viewer's emotional response.
Choose music that matches the mood and pacing. If your edit is fast and energetic, pick a track with forward momentum. If it's slow and contemplative, choose something minimal and spacious. Avoid overused stock music; your audience has heard those tracks in a thousand other videos.
Layer in sound effects where they reinforce action: footsteps, door closes, wind, water, ambient noise. Diegetic sound (sounds that exist in the story world) makes scenes feel grounded. Non-diegetic sound (music, abstract effects) guides emotional interpretation.
If you're adding voiceover or dialogue, record it cleanly in a quiet space, then edit for pacing and clarity. AI-generated video doesn't have sync sound, so you're either narrating over it or building the audio layer entirely from scratch.
Mix your audio so music, effects, and voice sit at the right levels relative to each other. A common mistake is burying dialogue under loud music, or letting effects overwhelm everything. Use compression and EQ to keep the mix balanced across different playback devices.
5. Apply effects and finishing touches
Add effects only where they serve a purpose. Overusing transitions, lens flares, or motion graphics makes your work look amateurish.
Useful effects for AI video:
- Subtle sharpening to bring back detail the model softened
- Grain or film emulation to unify mismatched clips and hide artifacts
- Vignettes to guide the viewer's eye toward the center
- Motion blur on fast-moving subjects to smooth jittery motion
- Stabilization to correct unintentional camera shake
Add titles, lower thirds, or graphics if needed, but keep them clean and minimal. AI-generated video often has busy, complex frames, so simple typography reads better than ornate designs.
6. Export
Choose export settings based on where the video will play. For web and social, H.264 or H.265 at 1080p is usually sufficient. For broadcast or cinema, follow the delivery specs you were given.
Don't over-compress. AI video already has artifacts; heavy compression multiplies them. Export at a high bitrate, then let the platform (YouTube, Vimeo, Instagram) do its own compression.
A worked example
You've generated five clips for a 30-second product ad: an establishing shot, two product close-ups, a lifestyle shot, and a closing logo. Raw exports look inconsistent: one clip is too warm, another has flickering in the background, the pacing feels uneven.
In your editor, trim each clip to the moment where the action reads cleanly. Reorder them so the flow makes sense: start wide, move to product, shift to lifestyle context, end on logo. Apply a warm, cinematic LUT to all clips and adjust the establishing shot's exposure down slightly so it matches the others. Add a modern instrumental track that builds toward the end, then layer in subtle product sound effects (a soft click, a whoosh) timed to the cuts. Add a light grain overlay to unify the clips and hide minor artifacts. Export at a high bitrate for final delivery.
The result feels polished and intentional, even though the raw clips were uneven.
Common post-production challenges
- Mismatched lighting across clips: use color grading to bring them into the same range, or use hard cuts at natural transition points (day to night, indoors to outdoors) where a shift feels motivated.
- Flickering or strobing: apply a subtle motion blur or temporal smoothing plugin. If the flicker is severe, the clip may be unusable.
- Warped hands or faces: crop them out, keep them out of focus, or replace the shot if possible. Post can't fix structural distortion.
- Inconsistent motion speed: use speed ramps or retiming to smooth uneven pacing within a clip.
- Audio sync: AI video has no native audio, so you're building it from scratch. Use visual cues (footsteps land when the foot hits the ground) to create the illusion of sync.
Tools
You don't need expensive software to do professional post-work. DaVinci Resolve is free and includes a full-featured editor, color grader, and audio suite. Premiere and Final Cut are industry standards but require subscriptions. For audio, Audacity is free and capable; for more control, use Reaper or Pro Tools.
Responsible use in post
Don't use post-production to mislead. Color grading and audio can change how a viewer interprets a scene, so be conscious of whether you're presenting synthetic content as real footage. If your platform or audience expects disclosure, label AI-generated work clearly, and don't use post to erase that distinction.
